This is one of the finest sea kayaking experiences in the Arctic world. Bylot Island is the centerpiece of Sirmilik National Park; one of Canada's newest national parks. In the short summer season, this dynamic landscape explodes with life. The flora displays an array of splendid colors and birds flock here by the hundreds of thousands. One can regularly expect to see peregrine and gyrfalcons, snow geese, snowy owls and sandhill cranes. Wildlife species include; caribou, wolves, polar bears, ptarmigan and Arctic hare, Arctic fox and fat furry lemmings.

Off the coast is a rich marine environment with large populations of beluga whales, narwhal, orcas and the huge endangered bowhead whale. Seal species include; harp, ringed and bearded. We often see the 'one ton tusker' - the walrus.

Our trip begins in the Inuit community of Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik), where we spend the evening before making the 24 km crossing to Bylot Island by motor boat. The next 9 days are spent exploring approximately 100 km of this spectacular southern island coast by kayaking the rugged shores, hiking across colorful tundra valleys and trekking across the massive toes of glaciers.
